State of The Arts Report 2024

This inaugural report focuses on the impact of local private philanthropy on the work of BIPOC-led and BIPOC-serving artists and organizations.

Warriors of Imagination

As artists, arts administrators, and culture bearers, we are the warriors of imagination. We must envision a more free and just world than the one we currently live in.

We are the holders of stories untold and the creators of new ones. We play a unique role in breaking the curse of white supremacy, patriarchy, and myriad other forms of interlocking oppression, which prevent all people from being fully actualized human beings.

How We Got Here

Through our group work, we realized we needed to assess the strengths and challenges facing our local arts sector. We wanted to engage in the process of developing a shared analysis of the systems and processes that help and or hurt our work, and most importantly, we wanted to create a document to hold our collective vision for the future.

Methodology

We based the State of the Arts Report on qualitative data collected through interviews and focus group sessions. We interviewed eight Executive Directors from our coalition about the challenges of managing arts organizations in Silicon Valley. They discussed how local philanthropic organizations affect their missions, both positively and negatively, and shared their ideas on how the arts sector can shift from surviving to thriving with support from philanthropy and government. To encourage candid responses, we anonymized all feedback from these interviews.

In addition to the interviews, three "Collective Visioning Sessions" were conducted with 44 local artists from various disciplines. These focus groups provided insight into the artists' vision for a thriving arts sector and the barriers preventing this vision. Finally, this report incorporates research from key sources, including SV Creates, the San Jose State University Human Rights Institute, and Open I/O, to contextualize and support the findings.

Our Focus for 2024

This inaugural report focuses on the impact of local private philanthropy on the work of BIPOC-led and BIPOC-serving artists and organizations. While we recognize that our support ecosystem also includes government and corporate partners, this report specifically examines the role of local private foundations in 2024. Future reports will explore our relationships with other entities. Local foundations are often our closest allies in fostering a sustainable and vibrant arts sector. Unlike government and corporate foundations, private local philanthropy offers the flexibility and responsiveness needed to address the urgent resource gaps in our region.
